Funiversum in Essen, Germany: a well-designed family entertainment center with a clear layout

At Funiversum in Essen, a modern indoor entertainment concept has been realized that is specifically tailored to the needs of operators in the leisure market. Covering a total area of approximately 2,200 m², a versatile Family Entertainment Center has been created, in which different experience zones are strategically combined.

The clear zoning and targeted appeal to different age groups create an offering that keeps visitors active longer while simultaneously generating additional revenue opportunities.

An indoor playground with five themed worlds

The indoor play facility (approx. 1,650 m²) is divided into five themed areas: Ice Magic, Deep Sea Adventure, Jungle Fever, Summit Bliss, and Star Galaxy. Each zone has its own character and keeps children active in different ways.

In Jungle Fever, an interactive TAG Challenge by Rugged Interactive has been integrated. In small jeeps, the children race through the jungle on their own and discover new worlds. Ice Magic features a ball launcher and a ball pool with a ball fountain, while in Summit Bliss, a Trailblazer provides additional exercise.

A central eye-catcher is the climbing volcano in the Star Galaxy, which has been integrated into an upside-down hot-air-balloon structure and immediately draws attention.

Targeted Approach by Age Group

The park’s design is tailored to different age groups. The indoor playground is aimed at children aged 4 to 12, while a protected toddler area offers magical forest adventures specifically for children aged 0 to 4.

In addition, children aged 4 to 12 can try out their dream jobs in Mini City: at a fire station, a doctor’s office, a car repair shop, a supermarket, and a bakery. From an educational perspective, this is a highly valuable play area.

This clear segmentation enhances the park’s appeal for families with multiple children of different ages.

Trampoline park as a dynamic expansion

Via an underground passage, visitors reach the trampoline area (approx. 300 m²), which immerses them in a world of its own thanks to black light. Among other things, a High-9, a Freestyle Duo, and a ValoJump are integrated here.

The combination of physical activity and interactive elements adds extra dynamism and appeals to an older target group (ages 6 and up). The visual design, including murals, enhances the experience and highlights the area within the overall concept.

Additional Revenue Through Party Rooms and Food Service

Our nine party rooms are far more than mere event spaces—they are designed as self-contained themed worlds that drive the active marketing of group packages and children’s birthday parties, thereby generating a significant source of additional revenue. The portfolio ranges from the deep blue tranquility of the underwater submarine, where guests dive among corals and whales, to the imposing pirate ship, which invites guests on a grand adventure with its authentic decor. While classic myths are brought to life in the knight’s castle and the princess’s castle through gleaming armor and a walk-in carriage, our action areas focus on dynamism: Here, the industrial flair of the car party room meets the futuristic neon light edges of the Tron design and the thrilling stadium atmosphere for soccer enthusiasts.

This offering is complemented by the atmospheric Ice Magic, the expansive Safari World with its striking 3D jeep, and Jurassic Park, where prehistoric giants dominate the scenery.

The facility’s strategic architecture seamlessly integrates these experience zones with the hospitality concept. The dining area, located on the upper floor, serves as a central viewing platform with a direct view of the play area and the adjacent jungle zone. This visual axis ensures maximum engagement for accompanying adults and parents, which measurably extends the length of stay, while an integrated slide serves as a playful connecting element, leading visitors directly back into the action. This creates a closed loop of high quality of stay, emotional customer loyalty, and optimized space utilization.

A scalable concept for long-term success

Funiversum Essen demonstrates how a clearly structured overall concept contributes to longer visit durations, more intensive use of the facilities, and more repeat visitors.

The combination of theming, interactive elements, and targeted audience segmentation creates a future-proof concept that can flexibly grow with the market.
